Hessle foreshore: site of proposed flood defences in the setting of the Humber Bridge

We recently produced a Heritage Impact Assessment for engineering firm, Mason Clark Associates, which assessed the impact of the Hessle Foreshore Flood Defence Scheme on the setting of the Humber Bridge, a Grade I listed building which was only recently added to the statutory list in 1917.

LAND EAST OF BARNOLDSWICK

Here we were commissioned to assess the impact of a proposed, major residential development of a greenfield site on the setting of numerous listed structures most of which were linked to the Liverpool/Leeds canal. The site was located adjacent the highest point of the canal at the climax of a flight of listed locks. The setting of listed bridges crossing the canal, a nearby listed farmhouse and several non-designated heritage assets including the canal itself also needed to be considered. We worked with the client to produce a sensitive scheme that we felt would conserve the dramatic setting of these heritage assets and produced a Heritage Impact Assessment in support of the scheme. Officers have recently recommended the scheme for approval.

Mount Royale Hotel, York

Following pre-application advice from the Council that planning permission for the construction of two new dwellings in the setting of this Grade II listed building was likely to be refused, we were asked to produce a Heritage Impact Assessment for the proposal. Our research enabled us to demonstrate that the garden boundary had been much altered over its lifetime and that a building had historically been located on the application site. We were also able to suggest mitigation measures which enhanced both the setting of the listed building and the wider conservation area.   Members granted approval for the combined application for Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent at Committee.

residential development - Sutton Benger, Wiltshire

We were asked to provide a HIA for a major residential development on the edge of Sutton Benger, in Wiltshire. Our research showed that the village had developed from a linear, medieval settlement with a back lane and that the proposed extension was a natural progression of this settlement pattern and less harmful to the historic significance of the Conservation Area than other proposed sites which would have undermined this historic, linear character. We put forward landscaping recommendations which would mitigate the visual impact of the proposal in views towards the Conservation Area and also made recommendations regarding proposed materials, design, hard landscaping and lighting to minimise the impact of the proposal.

The New York Club, York

The New York Club is a Grade II listed, former working mens’ club (WMC) in the York Historic Core Conservation Area. The new owners wished to convert the building into a number of apartments. YHC were engaged to help inform proposals through an assessment of the site’s significance and to produce an HIA to accompany the ensuing planning and listed building consent applications. The building originally formed two dwellings of unequal size pierced by a central cart access which led to warehousing and stables to the rear. This central carriageway is rare within York and the building is also one of the earliest three storey buildings beyond the city walls. When the dwellings were converted to a WMC, the central carriageway, one of the stairs and two flights of the second stair were demolished. Historic cornicing was underdrawn, large, unattractive rear extensions were added, which necessitated the loss of part of the rear elevation, and a substantial section of the dividing wall between the two dwellings was removed at first floor level. YHC advised on the production of sensitive plans which reinstated much of this missing architectural detailing whilst achieving a viable conversion scheme for the applicant. The application was approved.
